TORPOR

No conversations discussing who are amongst the heaviest of the heaviest of UK metal acts can be complete without mentioning Bristol based sludge trio TORPOR.

Over the past twelve years this colossal band have been obliterating stages across the UK and mainland Europe, leaving behind an impressive discography along the way. TORPOR's latest full length album Abscission was met with overwhelming critical praise upon its release back in September 2023. A fine tapestry of sludge metal, lumbering doom riffs, forward thinking post-rock dynamics, cerebral drone passages, ambient textures, and stark spoken poetry - Abscission saw TORPOR distilling all their greatest strengths and influences into their tightest and leanest set of songs to date. Recorded by long time collaborative producer Wayne Adams (whose credits include Wallowing, Green Lung, Possessor and more) out in a very remote studio in the Welsh hillsides, Abscission captures a certain kind of isolation, confronting one's deepest fears and desires through total solitude.

In 2024 TORPOR performed two heroic sets at experimental music haven Roadburn Festival in the Netherlands. As well as their now notorious early morning ArcTanGent Festival appearance, cementing their place as a force to be reckoned with in the live setting. This year the trio have also supported Body Void, as well as playing lauded sets at Doomlines and CvltFest.

HOST BODY

Since coming into existence in early 2023 Host Body have sought to weave a thread of intensity and chaos throughout their music and performances. Their debut single ‘Mouth’, released in August ‘23, was the first fruit of these labours. Melding aspects of post metal, mathcore, and black metal, with aggressive synths, ‘Mouth’ blitzes listeners and provided a startling taste of things to come.

In August ‘24, Host Body brought their unsettling live presence to ArcTanGent for a second year in a row, opening the festival to rave reviews, with Dan Hillier of Noizze claiming that their set was “a … sharp, serrated and downright penetrating onslaught of no-nonsense extremity”. In addition to their ATG performances, Host Body played a number of shows throughout 2023 with members of the UK underground scene such as Creature, Torpor, Skin Failure, and El Moono, before ending the year supporting US screamo band Portrayal of Guilt.

2024 has also seen Host Body work alongside Joe Clayton at No Studio (Pijn, Wallowing, Tuskar, Still) to record their debut EP titled ‘Strain’, which is set for release in late October. ‘Strain’ sees the band further explore their electronic tendencies, and this is reflected in the first two singles ‘The Mountain’ and ‘Swarmer’. The release will also coincide with a journey to Ireland to play the 30th edition of the Siege Of Limerick festival, as well as an 10-date UK tour with sludge metal legends Torpor.
